Amanda can’t move. David is sitting next to her. He is not her son. Where is she? At a hospital? And where is her daughter Nina? David questions Amanda. She frantically tries to remember. She drove to the countryside with Nina, to recover from their hectic life in the city. Her neighbour Carla told her that many children in this region are born with major disabilities. Some of them don’t survive. Others are not affected until later. Like David, Carla’s son.
Gradually, Carla’s account, David’s questions and Amanda’s consciousness interweave into a hypnotising story about paranoid maternal love and the moment when the holiday becomes a nightmare. What is the poison? Where is it? When exactly did the landscape change? What can the individual do to oppose an omnipresent evil? Where science and industry have joined forces, is superstition the only thing that helps?
The novel Das Gift (Distancia de rescate) by Argentinian writer Samanta Schweblin was an international success. It was nominated for the renowned Man Booker International Prize, translated into more than 20 languages and adapted into a film by Netflix in 2021.

Amanda no puede moverse. David está sentado a su lado. Él no es su hijo. ¿Dónde está? ¿En un hospital? ¿Y dónde está su hija Nina? David le pregunta a Amanda. Ella trata de recordar frenéticamente. Amanda se fue al campo con Nina para recuperarse de su agitada vida en la ciudad. Su vecina Carla le contó que muchos niños de esta región nacen con graves problemas. Algunos no sobreviven. Como David, el hijo de Carla.
Poco a poco, el relato de Carla, las preguntas de David y la conciencia de Amanda se entrelazan en una historia hipnotizante sobre el amor maternal paranoico y el momento en que las vacaciones se convierten en pesadilla. ¿Qué es el veneno? ¿Dónde se encuentra? ¿Cuándo cambió exactamente el paisaje? ¿Qué puede hacer el individuo para oponerse a un mal omnipresente? Allí donde la ciencia y la industria han unido sus fuerzas, ¿es la superstición lo único que ayuda?
La novela Distancia de rescate, de la escritora argentina Samanta Schweblin, fue un éxito internacional. Fue nominada al prestigioso premio Man Booker International, traducida a más de 20 idiomas y adaptada al cine por Netflix en 2021.
